At YK Fire Rated Door Manufacturer, we ensure that all our fire rated doorsets comply with the rigorous standards set forth in BS EN 16034, which is essential for obtaining the CE marking.

Applicability of BS EN 16034

Only fire rated doorsets that fall within the scope of BS CE 16034 can bear the CE marking. This harmonised European standard defines material-independent, safety, and performance requirements that apply to all fire-resisting and/or smoke control doorsets used for:

  • Fire and smoke compartmentation.
  • Escape routes within buildings.
  • Manual or power-operated doors.

These doorsets are designed to operate in one of the following ways:

  • Opening and self-closing as a normal mode of operation.
  • Normally held open but self-closing in the event of fire or smoke.
  • Normally locked shut (e.g., service access doorsets).

Additionally, the scope includes doorsets completed with the following features:

  • Building hardware (e.g., locks, hinges, and handles).
  • Side panels, flush over panels, and/or transom panels (with or without glazing).
  • Vision panels integrated into the door leaf or leaves.
  • Seals for purposes such as smoke control, fire resistance, draught, acoustic, or weather resistance.

Exclusions from BS EN 16034

BS EN 16034 does not cover the following:

  • Fixed windows, glazed side panels, and/or overpanels, which are not integral parts of a doorset and are not designed to open.
  • Door assemblies manufactured from components sourced from multiple suppliers, where no single manufacturer or legal entity assumes responsibility for the product.

Self-Closing Requirement for CE Marking

It is crucial to understand that fire rated doorsets that are not equipped with a self-closing device and are not locked shut fall outside the scope of BS-EN 16034 and, therefore, cannot be CE marked. This typically includes fire doorsets installed in dwellings in England, where self-closing mechanisms are not mandated, except in specific cases such as:

  • Doorsets between a dwelling and an integral garage.
  • Entrance doors to a flat.

Compliance with BS EN 16034 for CE Marking

All products bearing the CE mark from our range are fully compliant with European safety regulations, ensuring they provide reliable protection in the event of fire and smoke exposure.
